      Alligator Wrestling

The sun beats upon the Earth

making waves of heat rise

like sidewinders ready to strike.

My young eyes widen on a primitive scene.

A Dusty Alligator crawls slowly over the ground

pressing ancient patterns into hot sand.

Jaws yawning Countless Enormous Teeth,

thick tongue hissing vapors flaming foul.

Silent, Courageous Indian Boy; so dark, defiant, proud.

Seminole blood racing, stalking to tame his ancient foe.

His Native instincts watching, waiting, ready to move.

With lightning speed he wrestles the writhing reptile onto its back.

Bronze hand stroking an ivory-white belly,

gently paralyzing the giant beast.

Prehistoric hide immobile, clawed fins at rest.

Our titillated pale faces gape at the roadside show.

I am an Indian Princess, innocent passions aflame,

rescued from dullness for a moment in time.

The green dragon is conquered, motionless.

My lithe Prince leaps with joy, and then…

He stands spread-eagle

eyes to the sky

Tribal blood pumping in

Acorn brown body.

He is a man and brave,

I will never touch him, know him.

I will never be an Indian Princess,

Rescued from my self-serving race.

Dust settles over the Seminole village .

Flat coins drop into a basket, no one smiles or nods thanks.

White faces return to their car, to drive where…

no alligators are.

Synopsis of my book “Alligator Wrestling”: My book is full of stories, essays, and novel excerpts with a few poems inbetween. The book title took the rather outrageous name of the opening poem. An essay titled ”Seasons at the Pond”  is about my life on a farm raising two boys. The cover of the paperback has a photo of that pond.  There is a novel excerpt about twins that came to the Chicago suburbs in the early thirites to be nannies and to go to a music conservatory. I have a story about two young boys who play baseball together, and another story about a man who went to prison. There is much more to read than these. Alligator Wrestling is for general audiences. Men will like it as well as women, and older children and teens may like some of the stories and poems. This book represents some of the things I’ve  been writing for 25 years.  I’ve always wanted the sale of Alligator Wrestling to be a partner in helping other people. I’m happy to announce that the purchase price will go to charity. Please go to “about” for more information.

I gave a reading of Alligator Wrestling to a meeting at the Seabeck Christian Conference Center in October and it was a huge success. I sold over $200.00 in books and the entire amount was dontaed to this non profit organization. See “About” for more information regarding other donations.
